What are the size and weight limits for carry-on luggage on a plane?

Every traveller naturally needs luggage in which they can comfortably store everything they will need throughout the flight.

However, it is important to bear in mind that the rules in air travel are set somewhat differently from those in road or sea transport. Do you know, for example, what conditions a carry-on bag for a flight must meet?

Have you already secured a parking space near the airport? Just a few clicks and your car will be safe for the entire duration of your trip.

How to Choose the Ideal Suitcase for a Flight

The choice of suitable luggage will naturally depend on several criteria. An athlete heading to Mount Everest will have different requirements from those needed for a family holiday. However, some conditions are the same for all travellers.

Airline Rules and Checks

Rules regarding carry-on luggage may vary between individual airlines, particularly in terms of weight, size and the number of items of luggage. It is therefore necessary to find out in advance how things work with the airline you will be travelling with. It is also worth checking the parking price list at Prague Airport in advance.

How Long We Are Travelling and Where

Each of us has slightly different ideas about the capacity of our luggage. It naturally also depends on where and for how long we are travelling. Our luggage should definitely be practically designed. Multiple internal compartments are ideal, as they help us keep track of stored items. When choosing a suitcase, it is a good idea to go for one with security straps on the inside. These prevent items from moving around on their own and thus protect them from damage and disorder. For a shorter trip, a travel bag made of sturdy material will suffice.

According to the Destination

For an active holiday where you will be changing location frequently, a wheeled travel bag is recommended. For a classic relaxing holiday or a longer business trip, a wheeled suitcase is the most suitable option. For a holiday by air, a so-called hard-shell suitcase is clearly the best choice, as it excels in durability. The amount of luggage can also help determine how early to be at the airport before departure. A car park near Prague Airport can also save you time.

Carry-on Luggage: Dimensions and Weight

The standard dimensions of carry-on luggage are generally approximately 55x40x20 cm (height, width, depth). Some airlines have maximum dimensions set at 42x32x25 cm.

Airport security is carried out by placing the luggage into a metal frame that it must fit into. It is therefore necessary to bear in mind that the dimensions include the handle and wheels. The weight of carry-on luggage ranges between 5–10 kg.

If the luggage does not pass, you are required to pay a fairly high fee for it to travel with you.

Carry-on Luggage and a Handbag on a Flight

There are no strict instructions on exactly what carry-on luggage should look like. You can bring a handbag, a men’s bag, a ladies’ handbag or a travel backpack onto the plane.

What Can Be in Carry-on Luggage

Documents

Passport or identity card, electronic ticket number/boarding pass. Visas if required.

Electronics

Carry-on luggage may contain a mobile phone, camera, video camera, laptop, tablet and other electronics. A power bank in carry-on luggage is also no problem.

Cosmetics and Toiletries

As long as you comply with the 1-litre limit, with no more than 100 ml of liquid in each individual container, you may bring cosmetic sprays, shaving foam, hairspray, toothpaste, deodorant, shower gel, shampoo, perfume, etc.

Medicines and Medical Supplies

The rule for medicines on a flight is that they may only be transported in carry-on luggage. The same rule applies as for cosmetics or drinks on a flight. Bottles must be placed in a resealable transparent bag, maximum 1 litre per person and the contents of individual bottles up to 100 ml.

The biggest problem is usually finding a suitable place to park your car before departure

If you arrange it in advance, you will avoid stress even during your holiday.

What Must Not Be in Carry-on Luggage

Sharp Objects

Knives, scissors, razor blades and other sharp objects definitely do not belong in carry-on luggage. Also be careful with work tools or martial arts equipment.

Hazardous Substances

This category includes primarily chemical and toxic substances, such as acids, corrosives, chlorine, tear gas and paralysing agents, poisons, car batteries, fire extinguishers and similar items.

Live Animals

Dogs and cats most commonly travel with their owners. However, rodents, fish, snakes, amphibians and birds are not uncommon either. Transport is therefore possible, but only in the hold.

Weapons and Similar Items

It is certainly logical that weapons do not belong in carry-on luggage. However, under no circumstances should you take replicas or imitations of weapons onto a plane either.

Summary: Carry-on Luggage for a Flight – Dimensions

You can quite easily avoid the unpleasant surprise of having luggage with non-compliant dimensions or weight. You simply need to keep an eye on it. Remember, however, that you will have to comply with the same rules on the return journey as well.

That is why it is a good idea to get a travel scale and tape measure. Simply hang the luggage on the scale’s hook and you will immediately know how much it weighs. Travel scales are usually also equipped with a pull-out tape measure.

Securing a parking space is very easy and you can do it from the comfort of your own home
