When You Are Not Entitled to Compensation for a Cancelled or Delayed Flight
Even though you have passenger rights, there are situations in which it is not possible to claim compensation for a cancelled or delayed flight. It is important to bear in mind the following exceptions.
Extraordinary Event at the Airport
Bad weather
Aircraft Malfunction Due to an Unforeseeable Event
Unfortunately, you cannot influence a flight delay or cancellation
Compensation for a Delayed Flight

Financial Compensation for Delays of More Than 3 Hours
If your flight is delayed by more than 3 hours, you are entitled to financial compensation. The amounts are determined by the length of the flight:
- 6,200 CZK for flights shorter than 1,500 km.
- 9,920 CZK for flights over 1,500 km within the EU (+ Norway, Iceland, Switzerland) or for flights outside the EU with a distance of 1,500–3,500 km.
- 14,880 CZK for flights outside the EU exceeding 3,500 km.
- For full compensation, the flight delay must be more than 4 hours.
- For delays between 3 and 4 hours, you are entitled to half the compensation (i.e. 7,440 CZK).
Entitlement to Refreshments
- In addition to financial compensation, you are also entitled to reasonable refreshments when a flight is delayed by more than 2 hours. This entitlement applies regardless of the reason for the delay, whether it is bad weather or other extraordinary circumstances.
- The length of the expected delay affects when the entitlement to refreshments arises:
Entitlement to Accommodation
- If your flight is delayed or cancelled such that you will not fly until the following day, you are automatically entitled to hotel accommodation and transport between the airport and the hotel.
- Again, the reason for the delay is irrelevant — this applies even in the event of unforeseeable events such as volcanic eruptions or snowstorms.
- If the airline refuses to provide accommodation, you can arrange a hotel yourself and subsequently claim reimbursement from the airline — in this case, it is better to obtain a flight delay confirmation.
- For parents, flying with a baby is a particularly sensitive topic, so always enquire about your entitlement to accommodation, be prepared for all possible situations and find out who should not fly.
Compensation for a Cancelled Flight – When You Are Not Entitled
Your entitlement to compensation lapses if the airline notifies you of the cancellation
- More than 14 days before the scheduled flight.
- Between 14 and 7 days before the scheduled flight and you are offered an alternative connection departing no more than 2 hours earlier and arriving no more than 4 hours later.
- Less than 7 days before the scheduled flight and you are offered an alternative connection departing no more than 1 hour earlier and arriving no more than 2 hours later.
A flight delay or cancellation can come unexpectedly, but what you can plan is stress-free parking before departure
